Why Intentions Work Better Than Resolutions — A Somatic Approach to the New Year

Every January, we’re encouraged to “set goals,” “push harder,” and “be better.”

But for many intuitive, sensitive, or creative women, resolutions don’t feel motivating — they feel constricting.
They activate pressure instead of possibility.

That’s because resolutions often come from the mind.
Intentions come from the body.

Why Resolutions Often Backfire

Resolutions usually rely on discipline and control — two things that don’t work well when your nervous system is already stressed.

They often sound like:

  • “I should…”

  • “I need to fix…”

  • “This year I won’t be like this anymore…”

From a somatic lens, resolutions can trigger:

  • resistance

  • shame

  • freeze or avoidance

  • burnout before momentum builds

Your body hears a demand — not an invitation.

Why Intentions Feel Different

Intentions don’t force change.
They orient you toward what you want to move toward.

An intention asks:

  • How do I want to feel?

  • What quality do I want more of?

  • What does my system need to experience this year?

When intentions come from the body, they’re easier to sustain — because they’re rooted in regulation, not pressure.

A Somatic Prompt for the New Year

Instead of setting a resolution, try this:

Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.
Slow your breath.
Then ask:

“What quality does my nervous system need more of this year?”

You might hear words like:

  • steadiness

  • spaciousness

  • trust

  • ease

  • courage

  • rest

  • clarity

There’s no right answer — only what feels true.

Let that word guide your choices, not control them.

How Somatic Therapy Supports Intentional Change

Through somatic therapy and EMDR, we work with the underlying patterns that make change feel hard — not by pushing, but by restoring safety.

As your nervous system regulates, intentions naturally become action:

  • boundaries feel clearer

  • habits shift organically

  • motivation returns without force

  • self-trust deepens

Change becomes embodied — not performative.
