Frequently Asked Questions:

How is therapy different from the mentorship being offered?

Psychotherapy and mentorship share many similar qualities. They both aim to provide support, guidance and a safe space to explore your experiences.

Therapy, by definition, is the treatment of mental health disorders. Traditional psychotherapy aims to treat mental health disorders and symptoms, usually aiming for symptom reduction and achieving a “baseline” level of functioning. Psychotherapy usually involves extensive history taking and focuses on identifying root causes for present day challenges, oftentimes with an emphasis on family of origin dynamics, chemical imbalances, coping mechanisms and relational functioning.

Mentorship assumes the mental health of the mentee and does not aim to assess, diagnose or treat mental health disorders or symptoms. The challenges the mentee is experiencing are understood within the framework of the natural process of personal transformation that can impact an individual’s well-being in all spheres (relationally, emotionally, mentally, physically) and are treated as such. Mentorship is not a substitute for mental health or medical treatment.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured therapeutic process that can help you reduce distress related to disturbing life experiences that contribute to current challenges.

This protocol uses rapid eye movements to:

  • desensitize you to traumatic or painful life experiences and associated “triggers”

  • help you reprocess or rewrite the beliefs you developed as a result of these events

  • regulate your nervous system to enhance feeling grounded and calm

EMDR can help reduce the intensity of triggers that remind you of experiences from the past so that you can navigate future situations with more success and confidence.

EMDR can be applied in a variety of situations to reduce the intensity of distress, improve performance, and enhance an overall sense of well-being.
