The Difference Between Rest and Collapse: How to Tell If You’re Actually Recharging
You cleared your schedule. You put your phone away. You even canceled plans.
But instead of feeling rested, you feel flat, disconnected, or numb.
That’s not rest. That’s nervous system collapse.
Why Rest Doesn’t Always Feel Good
In a culture of burnout and productivity, rest is often sold as a luxury. But for many high-performing, sensitive women, even rest can feel like a threat.
That’s because your nervous system has been running on survival mode for years — and when it finally gets a break, it doesn’t know how to downshift. Instead, it crashes.
What you think is rest might actually be a freeze response: a state of nervous system shutdown that looks like exhaustion, apathy, or emotional disconnection.
Somatic Signs of Collapse (Not Rest)
Heavy limbs or difficulty moving
Numbness or disconnection from body sensations
A sense of hopelessness, dread, or apathy
Difficulty initiating even small tasks
Foggy, slow, or spaced-out thinking
Feeling worse after taking time off
Collapse isn’t laziness. It’s your body trying to protect you by conserving energy after prolonged stress or activation.
What True Rest Feels Like
Regulated, restorative rest feels different:
A gentle exhale in the body
Subtle aliveness or presence returns
Natural curiosity or motivation begins to flicker
You feel more connected to yourself, not less
In short: true rest refuels you. Collapse leaves you depleted.
How to Move From Collapse Into Regulated Rest
Start small. Your body needs titration, not intensity. Try:
Bilateral stimulation (like gentle tapping or walking) to bring the body back online
Supportive sensory input like calming music or warm water
Safe and Sound Protocol to help shift the nervous system into parasympathetic calm
Somatic therapy to work with these states physiologically, not just cognitively
The key is presence without pressure.
Let your body lead.
Support Through Somatic and Holistic Therapy
In my holistic therapy work with women across California, I help high-achievers and creatives:
Recognize when they’re in collapse vs. true rest
Build capacity to slow down without crashing
Release the shame around "not doing enough"
Reconnect with their body’s natural rhythms
We do this through:
Somatic Therapy to help the body discharge stored stress and return to a baseline of safety
Safe and Sound Protocol to support vagus nerve tone and regulation
Holistic therapy to honor both psychological and energetic needs
